1.0 PROFILE IN BRIEF
Prof. Adeshola Olatunde Adepoju is the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Jericho, Ibadan. As an environmentalist, Prof. Adeshola Adepoju has participated and served as negotiator in several conventions of the United Nations on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In view of this and based on the sterling performance and outstanding achievements of Prof. Adeshola Adepoju, especially in the areas of ensuring harmonious relation between man and the natural environment, he was also unanimously elected as the Chair of the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) in October 2020. A position an African will be holding for the first time and equivalently serving for the second term in 2022.
Prof. Adepoju has contributed significantly to UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme in Nigeria and surrounding environment. As the former Chair of African Network and Man and Biosphere in Nigeria, he convened the 6th Session of the AfriMAB in Nigeria. He facilitated and coordinated the hosting of the 33rd session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) in Abuja, Nigeria in year 2020, a session successfully held for the first time in an African country. The unrelenting efforts of Prof. Adeshola Adepoju culminated in the nomination, submission, approval and designation of three additional Biosphere Reserves in Nigeria in 20201. This is quite notable, because prior to this time, Nigeria had only one of such UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (Omo Biosphere Reserve) which was established far back in 1977, over four decades ago. The designation of these Biosphere Reserves within the country, resulting in the protection and conservation of over 1.8 million hectares of forest areas in the country.
In addition, he currently serves as the Coordinator, Ministerial Committee on National Afforestation Programme; Technical Committee Chair and member, Governing Council, National Forestry Trust Fund (NFTF); member of the TETFund Standing Committee on Research and Development; and member of the Governing Councils of Redeemer University, Ede, Osun State and Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State.
Prof. Adepoju was also appointed as the Coordinating Chair of the implementation committee for the planting of 25 million trees as pledged by Mr. President during the United Nations General Assembly. In furtherance of the Federal Government’s commitment to Productivity improvement in the economy and the ideals of excellence in service, Prof. Adeshola Adepoju was among the few eminent Nigerians honoured with the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award in 2019 by the Mr. President.
His tenure as the Director General has brought great innovations, rapid infrastructural and scientific development to Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) and its allied rural based research centers, outstations and colleges. This accorded him various awards including include Most Outstanding Public Servant of the Year; Best Director-General of Research Institute; and Most Outstanding Friend of Ibadan land in 2021, among others. Prof. Adepoju has been very instrumental and has played cognitive roles various UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme programmes, particularly, approval of three additional Biosphere Reserves in Nigeria and hosting of the 32nd session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) in Abuja, Nigeria in year 2020.
1.1 CAREER PROGRESSION
Prof. Adeshola Adepoju has been very instrumental and has played cognitive role in the;
• Successful Enactment of an Act to Establish and gazette the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria for Forestry Research, Education and Training in Nigeria; and for Related Matters, 2018
• Infrastructural and Capacity building Developments including construction and renovation of infrastructures within the Institute; repositioning of staff members for optimum performance, turn-around of the operational structure of the Institute among others. Prof. Adepoju has facilitated complete overhaul of the Institute’s infrastructure; which were hitherto at the state of dilapidation. This includes new office equipment and facilities, improved maintenance of the environment, removal of systemic decay in the equipment and facilities, and creation of conducive working environment. As a result of the above, there is measurable increase in staff productivity. In addition, Prof, Adepoju has channeled more funds, via capital and overhead allocations from the Federal Government to infrastructural and staff motivation development. Presently, staff of the Institute now enjoy relatively higher supply of electricity in their offices via installation of solar power generating system. Laboratories in FRIN Headquarters and Outstations were duly equipped, within limits of available fund for optimal productivity. The physical environment of the Institute is now cleaner, aesthetically beautiful, and landscaped. Indeed, any visitor to the Institute, who knew how the Institute was in the time past, will be amazed at the transformation that has taken place in the Institute. All encroached land and resources of the Institute were also reclaimed and secured.
• Other infrastructural rejig include: establishment and equipping of FRIN Central Laboratory; acquisition of various modern forest inventory and laboratory equipment; upgrade of research facilities in the institute; establishment of Aviary within the Institute; establishment of ecotourism and office complex at Queen’s Plot in Akure Forest Reserve to serve as accommodation for research scientists, academicians, students and tourists; rehabilitation of office/accommodation facility at Omo Biosphere Reserve, Ogun State; inauguration of Professional Advisory Council for the Institute in line with the FRIN act 2018; receipt of donated buildings and other facilities by the Governor of Borno State for the take-off of the Federal College of Forestry Resource Management, Maiduguri, Borno State (North East); construction and furnishing of the FRIN International Conference Hall, installation of solar panels and lights to enhance research activities and security system of the Institute
• Acting under Ministerial approval, Prof. Adeshola has brought about additional recruitment of staff to the workforce of the Institute in order to adequately meet the demand of actualizing the Institute’s mandates. More research officers, Forest Superintendents, and other support staff were recruited. These set of staff were judiciously distributed to FRIN Headquarters, Outstations and Colleges; and has improved the personnel structure of the Institute. As at present, FRIN can boast of qualitative Research and non-research staff members who can compete favourably with staff of Institution of like mandates in their areas of expertise. By extension, the recruitment exercises complemented the Federal Government’s drive towards employment generation.
• Establishment of additional outstations including;
• Gombe Research Station, Gombe State
• Derived Guinea Savanna Research Station, Ogbomoso, Oyo State State
• Northern Guinea Savanna Research Station, Nassarwa, Nassarawa State
• Sudano-Sahelian Research Station, Sokoto, Sokoto State
• Forest Based Rural Resource Center Iwofin, Oyo State
• Establishment of additional colleges including;
• Federal College of Forestry Resource Management, Sakpoba, Edo State (South South)
• Federal College of Forestry Resource Management, Isiagu, Ebonyi State (South East)
• Federal College of Forestry Resource Management, Maiduguri, Borno State (North East)
• Production of forest management plan for Anamelo Forest Concession Limited, Lagos; production of forest management plan for association of charcoal exporter of Nigeria (ACEN); mapping of Kogi state forest reserves, review of Kogi state forestry law and member of Edo state forestry advisory committee.
• Establishment of a conservation Arboretum for rare, threatened and endangered tree species, wildlife and bird sanctuary measuring fifteen (15) hectares.
• Establishment of a two (2) hectare herbal garden for the recently created Biomedicinal Research Centre of the Institute.
• Establishment of a wood – plastic polymer mini factory at FRIN Headquarters in furtherance of the waste to wealth project of the Federal Ministry of Environment thereby ridding the environment of plastic waste.
• Establishment of a six strategic Rural Resource Centers for communities’ engagement, capacity building and extension services.
As an erudite scholar, he has to his credit numerous scientific journals and articles, taught many students, supervised many research projects at graduate and post graduate levels. He remains a teacher and a mentor. He is a Life Member and Fellow, Forestry Association of Nigeria (FAN); Fellow, Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists (NAAE); Fellow, Wildlife Society of Nigeria (WISON); Member, Farm Management Association of Nigeria (FAMAN); Member, Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON); and Member, Horticultural Society of Nigeria (HORTSON).
His research focus is in the area of natural resource economics and productivity; policy issues in agriculture and forestry; farm management economics and strategies; poverty, food security and nutrition economics; effect of climate change on agroforestry production and livelihood diversification, inequality and impact assessment; land and labour productivity/governance; microeconomics and marketing.
